“And It Was Summer” – Sursum Corda News June 2022
Dear Sursum Corda Mamas–
And it was summer. And the rhythms of days shifted. And the needs of the children changed, yet again. And school time halted, or petered out, or continued in a different mood.
Polysyndeton is the literary device which uses insistent conjunctions–more ‘ands’ ‘ors’ or ‘buts’ than we would ever expect–to slow the pace of reading, to give a sense of flow and rhythm and time passing. It is particularly noticeable in the King James translation of the Bible, which is full of passages like this:
“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. … and God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1: 14-18)
As we shift seasons, education and community will look different. For the next twelve weeks, there will be no Thursdays at Taft to make us frantic or to keep us steady. But life will keep flowing on, one day and another and another, like a sign to us that seasons are from the Lord. And it will be good.
With love,
Heather (for the Board)
